My name is Julie and I began my yoga journey in my late thirties. I started to practice yoga for my health and weight loss. I have struggled all my life with my weight and self confidence. During my years of practicing yoga I have lost weight, gained it back and lost it again. I have had physical issues that have forced me to step back and re-evaluate my yoga practice.
During my journey, I decided to get my 200 RYT (Registered Yoga Teacher) to enhance my practice and learn more about the origins and history of yoga. Two years after completing my 200 RYT, I decided to create my own yoga organization. Om Yoga Kalamazoo began February 21, 2017.
In January 2017 I received my certification in Chair Yoga. Chair yoga makes yoga more comfortable and accessible to anyone. You can bring your yoga practice up off the floor!
In May of 2017 I completed a certification in Yin Yoga. Yin Yoga slows down your practice and focuses on the hips, knees and back.
Continuing my yoga journey, I am in the process of obtaining my 500 RYT through Beaumont School of Yoga Therapy (BSYT) at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, MI. In this class I am gaining insight to the Yoga Sutras and the spiritual aspects of yoga.
Through BSYT I was introduced to Y12SR.I was intrigued by the combination of yoga and 12-step recovery and received my Y12SR certification in January 2019. Alcoholism has been an influencing factor in my life and I am amazed by how the practice of yoga on your mat can translate into a practice in life for coping with addiction.
In 2020 my goal is to start a yoga class for breast cancer fighters and survivors. Your community is your support and what better way to be a part of a community than through yoga? My hope is to create a sangha (community) to help support each other on and off the mat.
I want to make yoga accessible for anyone. Whether you are suffering from a physical limitation, or depression, or grieving, or have an addiction, yoga can help you physically, emotionally and spiritually. Yoga truly is for everyone!
