Life is full of addictions. So many people have them. If you don’t have an addiction, you probably know someone who does. It’s frustrating for the person battling the addiction and it’s frustrating for their loved ones.

From drugs to alcohol to sugar, addiction has touched my life in many ways. I understand how it is to deal with someone who has an addiction. I understand how it is to deal with my own addiction. It’s a daily struggle to fight yourself to control your cravings.

I practice yoga to help keep my mind centered. It helps to focus on my breath and moving. After yoga I feel like I have done amazing things for my body and I’m less likely to give in to my own addiction. I have also found that meditation helps. I feel that it’s so important to take time away from each day to just meditate. It’s a time to focus on clearing your mind and letting everything go. Yoga and meditation go hand in hand.

Starting this Monday, Refuge Recovery Kalamazoo will be holding donation-based meditation. RRK will be led by Erick Boulter. Erick has his own story of addiction that he will share. The meditation will focus on helping to control cravings. Refuge Recovery is a different way to find support in your addiction and recovery. This can be used as a supplement to other programs such as AA or NA. Refuge Recovery will meet at 5:30pm on Mondays and Wednesdays. Come meditate, then stay for yoga!

This week Monday night yoga is Gentle/Yin. This class is slower-paced and begins with a gentle flow and ends with yin yoga where we hold poses for a longer length of time. Yin yoga is a great way to open up the lower part of the body for sitting in meditation. Monday night class starts at 7 pm.
Wednesday night yoga is Chair yoga. Chair yoga brings your practice off the floor and utilizes a chair for modification of classic poses. Standing poses will utilize a chair for balance and alignment. The slower pace accommodates different levels of mobility. Wednesday night class starts at 6:30 pm.

Join Erick Boulter and me this week at Unwindings, located at 5466 Holiday Terrace in Kalamazoo.
